Official Obituary of
Carl Bradford Olson
February 21, 1943 - November 13, 2015

Carl Bradford Olson, 72 died on Friday evening, November 13, 2015 in Coeur d' Alene, ID. Carl was born in Plainfield, NJ on February 21, 1943. He spent his childhood in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania and graduated from Kennett High School in Kennett Square, PA in 1961. Carl graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in 1966 and a Master's Degree in 1968, both from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His career as a Chemical Engineer, mostly in the oil industry, brought opportunities to bring his family to Idaho, Illinois, Texas, and California.

Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, and more specifically brought his family to enjoy the outdoors as he did. Carl enjoyed traveling, dining, dancing, singing, playing games, boating, waterskiing, fishing, camping, backpacking, cross country skiing, golf, tennis, white water kayaking, and biking. He sought adventure throughout his life. An example of this is that at age 17, he and a friend went on a week-long bicycle camping trip peddling 375 miles from their home in Kennett Square, PA to World's End State Park near Williamsport, PA and back. In the early 1970's he was part of a group of white water kayaking enthusiasts that brought popularity to the sport in Northern California. Even later in life, he went on extended bicycle trips, canoe trips, and backpacking trips in search of natural scenery in the "Church of the Great Outdoors". Many will remember him for asking, towards the end of any outing or trip, "What were your three favorite things?" This positive tradition now continues throughout the family.

Carl was a devoted husband and father. He wanted the best for his family and prided himself in working hard. Carl was an Eagle Scout, a deacon in the Presbyterian Church, and a member of: the Sierra Club, the Optimist Club and Toastmasters. He was also responsible for 3 patents in the field of Chemical Engineering.

Carl's love of the outdoors brought him to Sandpoint, ID for retirement. He enjoyed spending time on Lake Pend Oreille and Priest Lake. Struggles with Parkinson's disease ultimately brought him to Coeur d'Alene for care before his death.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents Neal Olson and Phyllis Olson Wheatlake; step-father Burton Wheatlake; and brothers Mark and Kenneth Olson. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Joanne Glase Olson; son Nathan and daughter-in-law Kira of Bulverde, TX with grand-daughters Karis and Kennedy; son Eric and daughter-in-law Rachel of Post Falls, ID with grand-children Natalie, Sarah, and Jacob; sister Lynn O. Wilson and brother-in-law Alfred E. Dunlop of Pilot Knob, NY and their children Mary and David; sister Dr. Janet Olson and brother-in-law Bruce Babcock of Lodi, WI and their sons Brian, Kevin, and Douglas.

A memorial service is being planned for the summer of 2016 in Sandpoint, ID. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or Hospice House at Hummingbird Fields through Hospice of North Idaho.
